Thompson shows flashes on film of well-rounded running back skills. Would benefit from a breakout senior season with consistency. Has good size and the room to continue adding lean bulk to improve his downhill power. Shows better-than-adequate speed, strength and elusiveness as a back. Displays the shiftiness to make the first defender miss through the hole and adequate lateral quicks bouncing outside. Projects to be more of downhill, one-cut-and-go back at the college level though as we do not see great vision or sharp cutback ability as a zone runner. We would like to see him hit up harder between the tackles but shows flashes of in-line strength breaking first contact, particularly when he builds speed/momentum into the second level. While he has a strong frame that should only continue to get bigger, he lacks great power at this time and is not an explosive back. Downhill burst out of his cuts is marginal and tends to build speed. Not a game breaker in the second level with an extra gear or great elusiveness. He does display good hands out of the backfield and versatility moving the chains. Overall, we feel Thompson could be a late bloomer on the recruiting trail, particularly if he continues to physically develop and becomes more aggressive as a downhill runner. May get a look at corner or safety as well.
