No, no, no not a chance that the Yankees lost money last year. They may have lost money on their Ticket sales minus payroll minus operating cost....perhaps they were in the red on their operating expenses for last year...even though that hasn't been typical in the past either. They may have had a sizable expense accounted for last year due to the opening of their stadium. But the Yankees make an ungodly amount of money by licensing their brand, by owning their own TV network, etc.
I'm not sure what article you were reading but in an April Forbes article about the Yankees it states that they are worth 1.6 billion whereas Boston, the second most valuable team is worth 833 million. Double!!!

The numbers you are stating are probably ticket revenue minus the obvious expenses. That is the portion of revenue the Yankees share with teams like KC and Minnesota. Their network, for example, is all theirs. And I'm not saying that's wrong. And I'm not saying GS is bad or evil or something for turning the Yanks into the #1 team in the world. And to say he's not a businessman first is ridiculous. Of course he is. It's the revenue streams he created that lets him pay Arod, Tex, Jeter...all of them, top dollar without a blink.
Now I think you have me wrong as far as how I view GS. Sure, I kind of despise him for what he means to the overall game of baseball...but his balls can't be overlooked! If he would have bought the Mets they would probably be today's Yankees, or at least a very close second. It was his BUSINESS decisions all along that put him in the enviable place to pay whatever he wanted for the game's best players. In my opinion its a bastardization of the game...but obviously it works.
Still...it means a whole lot more if the Rays win a title.
