Default 2010-11 Team = Pot Heads?

Quote:
Prosecutor alleges KU basketball players got pot from dealer
By Staff and Wire Report

Kansas City, Mo. — A newspaper report says a man at the center of a large-scale marijuana case allegedly supplied the drug to multiple players from the 2010-11 Kansas men's basketball team.

The Kansas City Star reported Friday that an assistant U.S. attorney made the claim during a detention hearing for Samuel Villeareal III.

Villeareal, 32, was among numerous defendants charged June 11 with a scheme to distribute more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana.

The newspaper obtained a court transcript from a June 18 hearing in which prosecutor Terra Morehead claims Villeareal supplied pot to multiple members of the Jayhawks squad.

Kansas athletic officials declined comment Friday when reached by The Associated Press. Two players from the team contacted by the Star said they'd never heard of Villeareal. Two others refused to comment.

Jonathan Bortnick, Samuel Villeareal's defense attorney, told the Journal-World Friday a prosecutor at a June 18 hearing said his client was allegedly involved with Kansas University players.

"I have no comment other than I'm aware that during the detention hearing that was brought up," Bortnick said.

According to federal court records, Magistrate Judge James P. O'Hara released Villeareal after the hearing on $25,00 bond. His next hearing is July 30.

Villeareal was charged June 11 with 24 other people in Douglas County and Johnson County who face conspiracy charges. Federal authorities accuse the defendants of conspiring to distribute, and possession with intent to distribute, 1,000 kilograms or more of high-grade marijuana in the area. It was part of a four-year investigation that included included wire taps authorized by U.S. District Judge Carlos Murguia.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom's office has listed eight charged Lawrence residents in the group as Los Rovell Dahda, 30; Roosevelt Rico Dahda, 30; Sadie Jolynn Brown, 25; David James Essman, 35; Mark Lee Romero, 31; Daniel Mark Sieber, 31; Chad Eugene Bauman, 33; and, Carey Lynn Willming, 36. If convicted, the defendants face 10 years to life in federal prison and a fine of up to $10 million. Bauman and Willming were owners of Ultimate Tan, 2449 Iowa, that was raided June 13, the same day officers made several arrests in the case.

Villeareal is listed as an Overland Park resident.

I got more news for you. Players from the 2004-05 team smoked. The 05-06 team smoked, 06-07, 07-08 etc. Hey even 11-12 had players that smoked. Get over it! lol this is non news.

And to be honest w/ you, this sounds like a smear campaign. What relevance does 3-4 former clients of a weed dealer have in a case?

I agree that personally this doesn't matter to me (I've done worse in my younger days), but at the same time it still makes the program look bad. I'm just hoping that there isn't that close of a connection between the dealers and the program (ex. like in the recent mizzery case where the dealer had gotten tickets and even rides on team plane).

I'm curious as to why they only mention the 2010-11 team though. 1,000 pounds and a 4 year investigation = I'd assume more than just that years team bought from him and if say members of that team were mentioned because they were seen or caught on one of the FBI's tapes it could be bad news for them.

I have to agree. It's never good to have offseason news like this.

first of all our 2008 national championship team was by far our biggest group of pot heads ever and that is saying something. I DO think though that Self needs to tighten up things a bit. It sucks to see us finally getting national recognition for this but it has been a well known fact around campus for many years that KU has the biggest pot heads in sports year in and year out. Basketball and Football.

Not good news. But definitely not a big deal. Weed is barley even a drug. From personal experience alcohol go is way worse.

This is what they're trying to make the big deal out of? College kids smoking weed meanwhile the situation at MU is barely a blimp? What a freaking joke.

of course they smoke. all college players do. the real crime is those dudes who got caught with the kilos of weed. hard prison time for regular folks with day jobs and families.

If this was Kentucky, many of you who are dismissing it would be claiming victory in the Anti-Cal war. Don't be a hypocrite.

This has nothing to do with Meth or cocaine, so don't bring up UK. It has nothing to do with them.

Remember when we talked crap about UA and Josiah for his problems? Well it looks like it came back to bite us in the arse, but this is a dealer who supplies most of our players..ouch..It's not a big deal that players smoke, because who doesn't? I guess the whole Bill self would never let these things happen, he can discipline his players, etc. etc. talk was wishful thinking.

And this from a mod, a little bit funny, but not so much. You may have an inside track of these things - about Kentucky - but I would guess not too much. It seems our boys are spending their money on ear rings and cars for their momma, things like that.

FWIW, seems like a bad headline/ story to me - to publish it at all. If at all, and I say not at all, after someone on the team had been convicted of something.

Saying "its just weed" or "every student does it so it's ok" is hypocritical since it's still an illegal narcotic. My personal opinion is weed should be legal or alcohol should be illegal since aside from perhaps second hand smoke/contact highs they do roughly the same amount of damage on the body and have similar highs (you could make the argument that unlike alcohol weed rarely causes people to fight when you ingest too much, and would be beneficial to the economy because fast food places would have to hire more employees).

Like I said before I've done worse, from harder narcotics to being around grows when I was younger (since I caught a case in 2005 I've slowed down alot and now a days I drink may be once a month if that and don't really don't do anything else), so I can't really tell someone not to do it, but the laws none the less are clear that it's still illegal (technically nation wide, hence why the DEA still raids medical marijuana dispensaries).

But saying "everyone does it so it's ok" would mean you must think it's ok to do meth in Missouri or smoke crack in DC since "everyone" does it there, and "it's just weed", well meth is just meth, but none the less it's still illegal. "But weed may be legal soon", it's still illegal now though so that point is mute. "Weed use to be legal", so was meth and cocaine. Or "weed is natural", so is peyote but I'm betting if a player wigged out on it there'd be people talking trash on them for doing it. All in all if you take personal opinion of weed out of the equation and look at it black and white it's still a bad deal (hell I'm pretty sure I've seen people talk trash on Beasley for smoking on here).

As for it may help us get recruits, that's a bad frame of mind because if a recruit likes to smoke now they know one of the team's dealers may be away for potentially life and parents know that that stuff goes on at KU (I'll be the first to admit a parent has blinders on if this changes their opinions since it does happen at 90+% of colleges, but reading about it can't make them eager to send their kids to that school).

Also if say a Morris twin, Selby, T-Rob or someone like that was involved and happened to of been caught buying on tape, personal experience is courts love their money so I'm sure they wouldn't mind trying to file charges on them to try and get money from a pro athlete. I'm pretty sure a dealer facing 10-life and/or $10,000,000 in fines would be happy to help authorities if they decided to go after players.

Long story short, regardless of personal opinion on marijuana this is still bad publicity, and my dad said it best last time I saw him and hopefully players well do this from now on "next time don't be a dumb ass and do something where you can get caught, make sure to cover your @$$".
