Good for SMU. Glad for Larry. Not glad for us, liked having him around the program. Success comes at a price as we all know, but this years success really comes at a steep cost as we have lost some very valuable input from multiple high level performers around our program. Glad to have Norm back though.

It's just weird to me. A Championship coach at both college and the NBA, and he goes to SMU?? Has he fallen from grace? I didn't think so but maybe he is just in it for the challenge. I don't know how he's going to handle recruiting since he's 71 and has been out of the college game since freaking 1988. Maybe he thinks he can just be a figure head and that will work well enough. I don't know but this is just a weird situation for such a proven coach as Brown.

my thoughts exactly. kind of a weird place for him to go, especially considering they don't have a lot of basketball tradition

This is the basketball equivalent of Charlie Weiss to KU.
Maybe he just didn't want the expectations? Hope he does well though.

Perhaps. Or maybe he doesn't want to have to work as hard on the recruiting end of things and at a place like SMU he can have relative success just coaching what he has.

I thought I remembered reading a recent article where he said something about not wanting to campaign for a job but that he was still interested in finding a basketball related position. So I figure this is a win win for both of them, Larry gets to stay around basketball (likely without having to try too hard to get hired) and SMU gets a quality name and coach.
I was kind of hoping he'd take Hinson's position, but I'm still happy and rooting for Larry. Hands down one of the nicest people to of dawned the crimson and blue.

I think Larry has been there and done that. He wasn't in it to go to some powerhouse school, he just wants to teach kids the game of basketball. That's all. He's made the money, he's won the championships, now I think it's just about fulfilling his passion for teaching the game to kids at this stage of his life.

This reminds me of Majarus to SLU. Sadler could probably have a lot better job too, but with those jobs comes a lot more expectations. larry Brown is a basketball coach and thats all he wants to be. Not a recruiter and not a PR guy.

Did Sadler get a new job? I thought he was/is unemployed?

i love the guy. and it doesn't hurt that UNC fans are so pissed that he hangs around KU and not UNC.

Odd hire, but probably an easy gig with the expectation level there.

Majerus to St. Louis? Weis to KU?
Majerus has won a lot of games...but he's not comparable to LB. And Weis? Come on he hasn't won anything. LB has won ships in both the NBA and college! He's one of the best basketball minds ever. This would be more comparable (actually really, really comparable) to Parcells coming to KU (or SMU).

He's bringing Jerrance Howard and Rod Strickland in on his staff. Also Tim Jankovich might come on as HC in waiting. Pretty solid staff.
Bright side is should be easy to get Howard if a spot opens up on our bench.

Larry Brown, Jank, Jerrance Howard, and Rod Strickland. That is a grand slam for a school of their caliber and (lack of ) tradition. Covers all the perceived weaknesses associated with hiring LB. Kudos to SMU.
