There have been at least three separate incidents involving fighting between members of the football and basketball team. While fights among college students are nothing new, this situation made national headlines based on the fact that it involves student athletes from two nationally-ranked programs from the same school. Being excited for football season is still a new sensation for most Kansas football fans. Faced with a winning football culture for the first time in many of our lives, it’s sometimes difficult to rein in our optimism. And though the talking heads throughout the sports world seem to be picking Nebraska as Big 12 North champions this year, its hard to rule a veteran Kansas team out of the picture.

This time of year is always bittersweet. The weather is becoming warmer, the days grow longer and summer is approaching. Conversely, as I have little to no interest in baseball, it’s the worst sports season. We just witnessed the pinnacle of American sports in my mind, the NCAA basketball tournament, but now unfortunately, there is now nothing to watch until football season kicks off again this fall. Kansas Head Coach Mark Mangino met with media members at a news conference at the Anderson Family Football Complex last Friday to discuss Jayhawk football.
