TheShiver.com was on hand Saturday to meet the Mid Year New Comers to Kansas Football.
In Part 2, we talk to Defensive Back Cassius Sendish, Defensive Back Dexter McDonald, Offensive Lineman Ngalu Fusimalohi, and Defensive Lineman Chris Martin.
After it was announced late last week that Kansas linebackers coach DeMontie Cross would be taking the same position at TCU, the Kansas coaching staff wasted little time making sure their talented group of JUCO linebackers were staying Jayhawks.
“Samson {Faifili} was the first one who text me after Coach {Jeff} Blasko called”, Marcus Jenkins-Moore told TheShiver.com over the weekend. “I told him it’s about being family and staying together. One man isn’t going to stop our show. He agreed and we’re just ready to go.”
It’s hard to argue that the addition of defensive coordinator Dave Campo to the Kansas coaching staff didn’t make an instant improvement to a KU defense that ranked dead last amongst FBS schools in 2011. But what his unit lacked was a steady pass rush presence in the middle of his defense.
That problem might be solved in 2013 with the addition of linebacker Samson Faifili—a stout 6-foot, 240-pound linebacker with a nose for the quarterback.
Faifili finished his 2012 season at American River Community College with 62 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-loss, and 5.5 sacks (half of Kansas’ team total from 2012).
“If there is one thing that I’m good at”, says Faifili, “its sacking the quarterback. I can’t go wrong doing that.”
Kansas Coach Charlie Weis continues to bolster the talent pool for his 2013 Jayhawks just weeks after completing his first season as the head honcho on Campanile Hill. One of the key targets for Weis was Arizona Western corner Cassius Sendish who gave his verbal to Weis earlier this week.
Though his name might not be accompanied by a handful of stars, Sendish began getting a lot of love at the BCS level after earning All-Region and All-Conference accolades in 2012. Sendish finished the season with 3 tackles for a loss and 10 pass breakups to go with 29 tackles. When considering his 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame, and his reputation as a hard-hitting, physical corner, Sendish became a prized possession for a coaching staff needing to replace several senior DB’s including starter Greg Brown.
“It’s a major relief”, says Sendish about completing the recruitment process, “I feel good that I’m ready to have a successful career with the Jayhawks both on and off the field”.
