For anyone who follows college basketball, this is the best time of year. It’s Christmas, Mardi Gras and the Fourth of July all wrapped up into one. It’s tournament time!
There are lots of reasons why the tournament is so much fun. For one, it’s the time when anything can happen. Tyshawn Taylor has caught a lot of flack from Jayhawk fans this year. Following what seemed to be a break-out off season in which he led the US team to victory in the FIBA Under-19 World Championship, many fans of the University of Kansas basketball team have been let down by his play thus far. Anybody who has followed college basketball this year has noticed John Wall by now. Perhaps the best college player in the county, Wall is the current object of lust for several prominent basketball broadcasters, the most notable being that famous bald guy, Dick Vitale. And he’s shown the hype surrounding him is justified.
Much to Dickie V’s fawning admiration, the Raleigh, NC native has averaged 19 points, 7 assists and 3 steals per game in his young college career. His 25 against UConn included 12 of UK’s last 15 points. He also made a couple of clutch free throws late in the North Carolina game to polish them off.
It might seem a bit early to write a wrap-up of the KU football season. After all, there are still three games to play, including the Border Showdown, as well as a potential bowl game. But for lots of Kansas fans, the Jayhawks’ season ended on Saturday with a 17-10 loss at the hands of instate rival Kansas State.
The season started with such high hopes. Returning several key players from last year’s Insight.com Bowl winning team, including much of the nucleus from 2007 Orange Bowl team, despite a tough conference schedule, this seemed like Kansas’ year to finally win the Big XII North. Unfortunately, the season has not played out like the Jayhawk faithful had hoped. The loss to K-State finishes any hope of winning the North, and heralds the program’s fourth loss in a row. As everyone who reads this site is no doubt aware, the past few days have been interesting ones for the University of Kansas. There have been at least three separate incidents involving fighting between members of the football and basketball team. While fights among college students are nothing new, this situation made national headlines based on the fact that it involves student athletes from two nationally-ranked programs from the same school.
