Schyler Miles is a rare sight in the world of Kansas Football. Not only is he one of the few Florida athletes that sign up to play football in Kansas but Miles may end up a leader of the Jayhawks defense as a freshman—an even rarer occurrence.

Nearly every defensive coach I have talked to about Miles instantly glowed at the mention of his name. Whether it was Coach Charlie Weis speaking of Miles on a personal level or defensive coordinator Dave Campo boasting about the young linebacker’s rare mix of instincts and intelligence the end result was the same: this kid could be special.

Slated to arrive on campus in June, Miles will likely push for the starting inside linebacker job. At 6’2” and 220lbs, Miles is self admittedly not the biggest or strongest linebacker prospect but he may end up being a difference maker for Kansas in 2012 and certainly beyond.

Why Kansas?

“I chose Kansas mainly because I wanted to try to play early. If I work hard I have a chance to start 4 years at Kansas. I had built a strong relationship {with Coach Weis} and I fell in love with the idea of that, plus Dave Campo. He’s won National Championships and coached in a Super Bowl and you can’t get any better than that. I thought it was the best opportunity for me to succeed”.

Best part of your game?

“I use my instincts and ability to get to the ball to make plays. I’m a downhill runner. I’m big. I’m physical. I’m not gonna be the biggest guy, I’m not gonna be the strongest guy, but I’m gonna work harder than everyone else on the field”.

What part of your game needs work?

“Just watching and breaking down more film. Taking the right steps, shedding blocks, and just adapting to the difference in the game from high school”.

What other schools did you consider?

“The final decision came down to Kansas, West Virginia, and Florida. It was hard to pass up Florida, the tradition, and SEC football but Florida was initially recruiting me as a full back. I probably would have chosen West Virginia because my heart and soul was at playing linebacker. I didn’t want to play full back at all”.

“I knew {Kansas} went to a bowl game a while back and they were real high {in the standings}. I didn’t know a lot about them but my first actual letter as a sophomore was from Kansas. So they’ve had my interest for some time”.

How you fit in?
“Coach Weis, Coach Campo, and Coach Cross they’ve all indicated that they needed me. They are not going to redshirt me and they need me on the field immediately. They told me nothing would be given to me but that if I worked hard and dedicated myself that I would be starting in no time. They need me right now is what they told me”.
