It’s barely been one week since the University of Kansas announced the hiring of Charlie Weis as their head coach but already the ol’ ball coach is shaking things up on the recruiting trail. Committed or not, Weis has been bending the ears of some of the nation’s top recruits. One of his first orders of business was to reach out to family friend Tre Parmalee.
Bishop Miege senior WR/DB Tre Parmalee had previously committed to Northern Illinois but opened his ears to Weis once the new coach made an offer to the Kansas City kid last week.
“Right now I’m still strong with Northern Illinois”, Parmalee told TheShiver.com Tuesday “but KU is definitely right there.”
Parmalee just returned from an official trip to NIU and said he enjoyed meeting his future coaches and teammates. But the lure of playing for Coach Weis is a tempting proposition for the son of current Chiefs tight ends coach Bernie Parmalee who also served on Weis’ staff at Notre Dame and Kansas City.
Parmalee will take an unofficial visit to Kansas this upcoming weekend and says he will likely schedule an official visit soon after.
The perks of playing at Kansas seem to be mounting up for the young Parmalee. Just a few days after Weis was unveiled, he quickly added Parmalee’s high school coach, and former Chiefs center, Tim Grunhard as the offensive line coach for the Jayhawks. But the benefits of playing close to home don’t end there.
Parmalee says that having his parents being able to attend all home games would be “awesome” and that he already has friends in the program. One of those friends is Charlie Weis Jr., who will be cutting his coaching teeth under his father’s guidance.
Another friend of Parmalee, Notre Dame transfer Dayne Crist, has been linked to Kansas as well which Parmalee says would be just another bonus to joining Kansas in 2012.
“It’s good to have people around you that you are comfortable with”, said Parmalee. “It definitely helps”.
But Parmalee’s decision will be based around his research and preference of position.
At Bishop Miege, Parmalee was recognized for his pass catching abilities but he was also a very productive defensive back.
“Right now I’m kind of liking the DB a little more,” said Parmalee. “Northern Illinois wants me as a defensive back but Coach Weis is telling me he wants to put me in the best position which gives me the best chance.”
The Jayhawks have a stockpile of young offensive weapon returning from the Turner Gill recruiting classes and Parmalee’s desire to play on the defense may play into Kansas’ favor. Although Parmalee didn’t indicate when a decision would be made, we will likely have a good indication on his preference after he makes an official visit to Kansas in the coming weeks.
