16,300 Kansas basketball fans filled up Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday in order to celebrate past, present and future of the Kansas basketball program. The first ‘Legends of the Phog’ charity basketball game saw some the basketball programs greatest players come back to Kansas where they once again heard the roar of the crowd inside the Fieldhouse. Paul Pierce, Nick Collison, Julian Wright, Mario Chalmers, Ron Kellogg, Darnell Valentine, Scot Pollard and many more Kansas greats put on a show in front of adoring fans, coaches and recruits.
For Kansas great Paul Pierce, losing for the first time inside Allen Fieldhouse just wasn’t going to happen. With 25 seconds to go in the game and the scored tied at 108, hit a three point shot as the shot clock buzzard sounded putting his ‘blue’ team up 111-108. The Kansas fans, and Pierce, went crazy after the shot and many assumed that Pierce just ended the exhibition game in the most memorable way.
Then – Mario Chalmers reminded fans of the shot heard round the world when he took the ball with 5 seconds to go and nailed a three point shot of his own as time ran out. The crowd, and Mario, once again went crazy inside Allen Fieldhouse.
No one could have scripted a better end to the game, and Pierce, who was previously unbeaten inside Allen Fieldhouse, was fine letting this one end in a tie.
