On Thursday afternoon TheShiver.com was informed by Maeshon Witherspoon, the mother of Kansas freshman Josh Selby, that Selby will not be returning to Lawrence for his sophomore year.

In a text to TheShiver.com, Witherspoon said “Josh is officially not returning to school.”

Witherspoon later confirmed to TheShiver.com that Selby will declare for the 2011 NBA Draft and will sign with an agent in the very near future. She also spoke about how her son has been misrepresented by some throughout his time at Kansas.

“I am ready to support Josh’s decision to try something he loves,” Witherspoon said. “Honestly the helped a lot. Just because a player in the NBA has a bad shooting night, doesn’t mean he can’t play. If a coach doesn’t win games he’s supposed to does that mean that he can’t coach? It saddens me that people forget that he was KU’s seconds leading scorer before his injury and now all of a sudden he can’t play or is overrated. That’s crazy and to be considered a headache or problem at the next level – this is a kid who sat through all the NCAA bull and didn’t know if he would play, but kept his smile and his cool through it all. How quickly we forget,” added Witherspoon.

Selby’s departure from Kansas makes it two years in a row that the Jayhawks have lost a high profile freshman from their roster. Xavier Henry also decided to enter the NBA draft after his freshman season in 2009-2010.

Selby averaged 7.9 points per game and 2.2 assists per game during an injury filled season.
