Angelo-CholClass of 2011 PF, Angelo Chol (San Diego/Herbert Hoover Video), is still busy playing with Team USA in the USA Men’s Youth Olympics in Singapore, but with the help of his high school coach Ollie Goulston, Chol has started working on figuring out which schools he will officially visit during his senior year.

Chol, who returns from overseas later this week, has seen his play on the court steadily improve throughout the summer despite his game being more suited to the structure of his high school team.

“It went well” said Coach Goulston about Chol’s summer. ” He’s in Singapore now, but he gets back on (August) 27th. He’s done well and matured a lot throughout the summer, and he played better the second half of the season than the first half. He’s not really an AAU guy. He’s such a team guy and likes structure so he’s much better in those environments,” added Goulston.

His work-ethic is one major reason that Chol improved so much throughout the summer, as well as it’s the reason why Chol will be looked at to lead his Hoover team to another successful season.

“I think the way he played this summer will really help him this season. I think his experiences this summer, especially playing with USA Basketball, has really helped him. Angelo is really a quiet guy who leads by example. Now he’s one of only two seniors, so we will need him to step into that leadership role. He will need to be demanding of his teammates and need to be vocal on the court,” said Goulston.” The thing with Angelo is he’s always been a great teammate. He’s humble and does what it takes, and does whatever he needs to do to win games. Now he needs to realize it’s his team. It’s on his shoulder and he needs to take that burden and lead the team. His game has really grown and he’s a dominate player, but to continue the success we’ve had he needs to step up his leadership role,” added Goulston.

Chol, who started playing basketball in the seventh grade, has seen his game develop so much that some of the top college basketball programs in the country are actively recruiting the 6’8″ 210 pound big man. Now that his busy summer is coming to a close Chol, with the help of Coach Goulston, will sit down to figure out when and where he will take his official visits. One school being considered by Chol, Kansas, has already secured a date for Chol to officially visit.

“We’re in the process with colleges right now,” said Goulston about Chol’s recruitment. As of now he’s only got one visit set up. He will visit KU for their Late Night,” added Goulston.

Late Night, which will take place on October 15th, is a date that worked out for both Kansas and Chol. As for other visits that Chol has plans for, those dates will be released at a later date.

“We’re in the process with in homes and officials. We’re just figuring it all out now. There was nothing to the Late Night visit but that it was a date that we knew worked out for both parties. There is no leader at this point,” said Goulston about Chol’s recruitment..

With Chol returning later this week, Goulston is hoping to have a complete schedule of when Chol will host in home visits, and when and where he will take the rest of his official visits.

The official visit to Kansas for Late Night certainly won’t hurt the Jayhawks in Chol’s recruitment. It will provide more time for Chol to learn more about the University and the basketball program, including getting to know coach Self a little better.

“Number one is that Angelo got a chance to see them (KU) play against UCLA last season. He was impressed with how effective their big men were, and how KU used their big men,” said Goulston. ”He is a Kansas type big man as a player because of his versatility. And you can see him fitting in there. Coach Self  impressed Angelo with how they ran and executed their plays. He needs to continue to get to know coach Self because Angelo does need to trust the coach wherever he goes,” added Goulston.

Wherever Chol ultimatley decides to play his college basketball, one thing is certain, that coach did a great job developing a trusting relationship between himself and Chol.

“He still is trying to figure out where is the biggest fit is. It’s important that he’s with people he can trust,” said Goulston. “Recruiting is hard because it’s hard to develop relationships with people. That’s important for Angelo  – not just for Kansas, but for any school that Angelo is considering,” Goulston added.
