Three-star defensive end, Geneo Grissom, is considered by some to be the gem of the 2010 Kansas football recruiting class. Kansas fans across the state have become very familiar with the 6’5″ 250 pound Hutchinson High School star over the last few seasons. Once Grissom decided that Lawrence was the place for him last summer, Jayhawk fans knew they had a future star heading on the football field.
Although Grissom committed to the Jayhawks, it appeared as if he was still a relative unknown on the football field across the nation. With the resignation of former Kansas head coach Mark Mangino, it became clear that Grissom was well known to many top programs across the nation.
It didn’t take long for the LSU Tigers to let their interest in Grissom known. The Tigers were quick to let him know that they were looking for defensive ends, and he was their top choice. After sending assistant coaches to see him, LSU head man Les Miles also made his away to Hutchinson to see Grissom. The secret was out, and the Kansas program still had a lot of question-marks surrounding it.
The Tigers did enough in their pursuit of Grissom to peak his interest in the Tigers program. Now Grissom will make the trip to Baton Rouge on the weekend of January 23rd.
Another college football powerhouse came calling on Grissom once the coaching change at Kansas took place. The Oklahoma Sooners not only made their interest known, but they also hosted Grissom on a visit shortly before Grissom. A visit that, according to Grissom, went very well. Bob Stoops is expected to check in on Grissom sometime on Wednesday (today) afternoon.
“I enjoyed it. I had a blast meeting the coaches and the players. Everybody was very helpful and very informative how things are run down there. I learned a lot about OU,” Grissom told the ESPN OU affiliate, www.OUInsider.com.
But before OU and LSU fans get too excited about the possibility of landing Grissom, new Kansas head coach Turner Gill made sure Grissom knew that he would be more than excited to have Grissom remain a Kansas commit.
Not only has Gill made his way down to Hutchinson to see Grissom, but so has new Kansas defensive coordinator, Carl Torbush. Now Grissom will make his way to Lawrence on he weekend of January 16th, a week before his scheduled visit to LSU.
Although there were rumblings about some other schools throwing themselves into the mix for Grissom, it appears that only three schools remain.
“Geneo is visiting the 16th-17th weekend,” said Hutchinson head coach Randy Dreiling about Geneo making the visit to Lawrence. “It’s down to LSU, KU, and OU,” added Dreiling.
With his visit to OU already behind him, the anticipation will only continue to grow leading up to Grissom’s two remaining visits, and of course, signing day only a couple of weeks later.
