Earlier this week Maeshon Witherspoon, the mother of Josh Selby, the #8 ranked player in the ESPNU 100, hoped to finalize plans to make her way back to Lawrence, Kansas on December 22nd for the Cal game. After talking it over with Selby, they felt a better plan would be to make the trip to Lawrence for the ‘Big Monday’ game on January 25th against Missouri. The visit on the 25th will likely be Selby’s official visit to Kansas as he should receive his scores from taking the required standardized test in late October by that time; typically, those scores are sent out 6-8 weeks after taking the test.
“The Missouri game,” said Witherspoon about which game they hope to see in Lawrence. “We know someone on that team too. Kimmie English is from here and his dad and I are close,” added Witherspoon.
Along with the return trip to Lawrence, Selby and Witherspoon have other schools they plan to visit in the coming weeks.
“I might have to pass since we are going to UK (Kentucky) in the 2nd (January). I am also trying to see Indiana and UK play also,” said Witherspoon of the initial plan to visit Lawrence on December 22nd.
Until Selby receives his standardized test results any visit that he would make is considered unofficial, meaning that he would have to pay for the trips to Kansas, Indiana and Kentucky if visiting unofficially. By waiting until the test results are in, his visits can then be considered official and the schools would pay for the travel expenses. To date, Josh has unofficially visited Kansas and Indiana since re-opening his recruitment in July.
With Indiana hosting Kentucky on December 12th, Josh won’t be able to travel with his mother to Bloomington due to his own basketball schedule, but according to Witherspoon, the basketball junkie inside her wants to see the game. It would be an opportunity to see two of the teams recruiting her son at the same time. Although plans aren’t finalized for that trip, Witherspoon is trying to work them out this week.
“No he can’t make that one,” Witherspoon said of Josh making the trip to Indiana with her on the 12th. ” I would like to go. I am a basketball fan and I like watching games. I can also see two of the teams at one time,” added Witherspoon.
