Entering the game on Wednesday night Oakland is supposed to have an answer for Cole and Sherron which is rare for any team. It may challenge the other guys to get involved early and often if the Jayhawks want any separation. Without further ado, running notes for the game.
Marcus Morris getting the start, let’s see if he earns it.
Oakland wears the uniforms with the names under the numbers to be “unique.” It’s not unique, it’s stupid and makes it look like an AAU uniform.
This season if teams give Collins an opening at all he will make them pay it seems–a sweet floater early on for the bulldog.
Marcus Morris is the most maddening player in a KU uniform in a long time. One possession he jacks a three with 30 seconds on the shot clock that clangs off the rim, but the next possession he gets his defender on his hip, puts a post-move on and scores easily. Smart plays good, dumb plays bad.
What is wrong with Tyshawn Taylor? He was awful in the Memphis game, and just has had too many poor plays this season already. Lazy passes, can’t hit a shot (as I type this he has a nice layup after driving around everybody).
Markieff Morris is in the game for one second and gets a foul called on him.
Xavier looks a little shaky on defense, but his offense is pretty alright!!!
Should it count as two turnovers when the Morris twins combine for one?
Typical Thanksgiving week crowd at the Fieldhouse.
Oakland’s Keith Benson looks like the real deal, 0-5 start for Cole. Benson is out-playing the All American. How many big men can dribble out and knock down a 18-foot fade away from the wing over Cole Aldrich?
The Jayhawks go on a little run to extend the lead before half. Marcus throws up a garbage Larry Bird-esque shot that goes in, Xavier throws down a one-handed alley-oop (his second of the game), followed by a failed alley-oop to Elijah Johnson who chased down the miss and found Collins from 3. There will be a lot of shots this year from Collins that will justify the old celebration of mimicking the throat slash. 7-0 run.
Has Sherron gotten dinged in every game of his career?
Forgettable first half for Cole. Benson was his daddy holding him to 1-of-7 from the floor and drawing two fouls. Benson had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks playing with an energy that I hope to see out of Cole in the second half.
Marcus showed why he deserved the start with 11 points and 4 boards in the first 20 minutes.
KU shooting only one free throw is cause for concern. This team could not get to the line last year so I just hope that changes soon. If Duke was number 1 and had only one free throw attempt in a half there would be a congressional hearing on it right?
Dave Armstrong and Greg Gurley break down the leftover turkey sandwich brilliantly:
Bacon
Swiss
Toasted Bread (Armstrong prefers Rye, Gurley does not)
Lettuce
Mayo
Turkey
When your team is better off with Tyrel Reed playing in your place, you must be struggling. Taylor just clanked a wide open 16-footer.
I prefer wheat bread, turkey, Miracle Whip and salt and pepper.
Cole looks to be growing a beard. I hope this happens. Grow a big nasty one like the guys on “Deadliest Catch” or PJ Carlesimo. It could only help the intimidation factor.
If we could combine the Morris twins into one super player he would be an NBA lottery pick, but he would also lead the nation in turnovers. I do like the fact that both of their arms look like an Ed Hardy shirt puked all over them.
Watch how high Xavier gets up on his jump shot. He seems to be in the air forever. If anybody remembers the old video game Double Dribble you could hold down on the button to make your guy jump, and as he was coming back down to the floor you could release the button in order to shoot. Not saying his form is that bad, he just seems like he jumps his highest on every shot.
Thomas Robinson is starting to remind me of Ben Wallace on offense. He is obviously an athlete, but has ZERO touch around the basket. Danny will have his work cut out for him.
You get the feel that Bill is really trying out different combos to keep them fresh or from clicking too early? I know he misses Brady Morningstar.
Taylor may lose his starting job because of his continued aloof play. Point Plankn.
Line of the night by Dave Armstrong: “What a move by (Marcus) Morris. Missed the layup, but the rest of the move was special.” High comedy.
Some of the Hawks look lazy, lost or bored to death on the court. Kind of like the football team has this year.
Tyrel Reed might get the start on Friday over Taylor. He just had a Chalmers moment where he nailed a 3 and stole the inbounds pass and went to the line for two shots. Some fire out of him.
Xavier banks in a 3 to lead the team with 22.
I hate it when guys high-five after a missed free throw, stupid.
A thirty point win for the 44thstraight at the Phog. Self has to be happy with the result, but has some tough decisions to make over the next couple of weeks to iron out his rotation. Everyone is allowed a bad game or two, but Taylor has yet to play well this season. Hopefully he snaps out of it or he is going to be relegated to defensive stopper only.
