After their in-home visit with Josh Selby and his mother, Maeshon Witherspoon, on September 9th, the Kansas coaching staff hoped that they had done enough to put themselves in the race for the #8 player in the ESPNU 100. Not only did Coach Self and his staff put themselves in the race for the 6’3″ combo guard from Baltimore, they impressed both Selby and Witherspoon enough that they made the trip from Baltimore to Lawrence on Thursday to unofficially visit the University of Kansas and take in ‘Late Night in the Phog’ Friday night inside Allen Fieldhouse.
TheShiver.com had an opportunity to chat with Witherspoon about the visit and about what both she and Josh thought about the University of Kansas.
“Well it was breath-taking to see the fans go crazy over the recruits,” Witherspoon said about the fans inside Allen Fieldhouse. “Josh spent some time with the players and the coaching staff,” added Witherspoon.
Josh, not only spent some time with the players, he also got to spend some time on the court with the current members of the Kansas basketball team.
“He got to play,” said Witherspoon about Selby playing with the current Kansas basketball team. “He enjoyed being around them,” added Witherspoon.
Witherspoon had a list of things that she wanted to learn more about during the visit as well. Apart from learning a little about what playing college basketball is like, Witherspoon was glad to learn more about the academic side of the University. She was able to learn about the people that would be helping Selby reach his goals academically and on the basketball court. Witherspoon left Lawrence with a very good imopression of Kansas.
“Yes,” Witherspoon said about being impressed by the academic side of the University and seeing the coaching staff in their environment. “They are a complete package,” Witherspoon added.
According to Witherspoon, Selby was impressed by the ‘Late Night’ crowd and the love Kansas fans show the basketball program.
“The atmosphere of the fans,” said Witherspoon of what impressed Selby. “And how supportive they are,” added Witherspoon.
With the visit to Kansas complete Selby intends to schedule more visits before making a decision on where he will attend college. As for Witherspoon, having her son attend Kansas is something that she appears to be very comfortable with should he decide Lawrence is the place for him.
“I could send Josh there and know the whole staff will take good care of him,” said Witherspoon of KU.
