Millwood (OK) High School quarterback, Kevonte Richardson, made his way back to Lawrence last weekend to, once again, see the University of Kansas and the Kansas football program. Although Richardson doesn’t graduate until 2011, the Kansas staff has already made it clear that Richardson is one of their main recruiting targets in the 2011 class.
The trip to Lawrence was the second for Richardson, who last made the trip in May with his high school teammate, and Kansas commit, Trayvon Henry. TheShiver.com spoke to Richardson about his recent visit and his thoughts about the Jayhawks.
“It was good,” Richardson said of his Kansas visit for the Southern Mississippi game. “It was fun to see Kansas play in person,” added Richardson.
Being a quarterback himself, Richardson paid close attention to Todd Reesing and the Kansas offense during the game.
“Yeah, their (KU) offense is similar to ours,” Richardson said of the Kansas offense. “It’s just like ours, really, so I really like their offense,” added Richardson.
Although Richardson didn’t have the opportunity to meet Reesing during the visit, he did get the chance to meet one of the other Kansas stars during his visit.
“I met the safety, (Darrell) Stuckey,” said Richardson. “He was asking if I was a recruit, what grade I was and stuff like that,” Richardson said.
Richardson also had the chance to, once again, speak to the Kansas coaches who made it clear that they would love to have Richardson in Lawrence.
“I talked to all of them,” said Richardson of the Kansas coaching staff. “Coach Mangino, coach Miller, I got a chance to talk to all of them. They want me to come up there. They said they are trying to get more kids out of the Oklahoma area,” Richardson added.
Richardson loved the roar of the crowd and the entire game day experience in Lawrence.
“It was authentic,” said Richardson of the Kansas crowd. “It was amazing. The atmosphere was great, I really liked it,” added Richardson.
In watching Kansas quarterback, Todd Reesing, Richardson couldn’t help but notice the weapons he has at the receiver positions with players like Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier.
“With all the receivers he has, he has so many different options to throw to,” Richarson said.
Kansas coaches, players and fans are all hoping that Richardson has the opportunity to see the Kansas offense perform well when the Oklahoma Sooners visit Lawrence on October 16th.
“Yeah, I’m coming back up for the OU game,” Richardson said.
The trip for the OU game would be Richardson’s third trip to Kansas before his junior year of football has ended. With that many trips, it appears that Kansas could be an early leader in Richardson’s recruitment.
“Yeah,” Richarson said about Kansas leading for his recruitment.
Although Kansas leads, it doesn’t mean that Richardson plans on ending his recruitment quickly. It appears that he plans to wait a little longer to see what some of the other schools who are recruiting him have to offer. Currently, Richardson has offers from Kansas, Arizona, Louisiana Tech, Tulsa, UNLV and Colorado.
After finishing his sophomore season with 2,800 yards and 23 touchdowns, Richardson is already putting up terrific numbers during his junior campaign. His Milwood team is sitting at 3-1, Richardson has 876 yards passing, 12 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions.
