July 10th is only a few weeks away, but it can’t come fast enough for Longview, TX native Carey Fortson. That’s when Fortson will make his way to Lawrence, Kansas to take a look at the campus, the facilities, and talk to the coaches. It’s also when Fortson could make his verbal commitment to the Jayhawks.
When Fortson makes his way to Lawrence on the 10th, it actually won’t be the first time Fortson has been to Lawrence and around the Kansas football programs.
“I used to live in Kansas City,” Fortson said. “I went up there and watched a game in like 9th grade,” added Fortson.
Fortson may already be a Jayhawk commit, but wanted to make sure to see the campus, facilities, and talk to the coaches before making it official.
“Likely so,” Fortson said on becoming a Jayhawk.
Kansas isn’t the only Big 12 program that has been recruiting the 6’0″ 165 pound receiver. Kansas State and Missouri, along with North Texas, SMU, Louisiana Tech, and TCU. However, the Jayhawks seem to be where Fortson seems himself fitting in the best.
“I like that they (KU) are in the Big 12 conference, and I like they way they play,” Fortson said. “I saw the Missouri game and they play hard and don’t give up. I can see myself fitting in well there,” added Fortson.
Fortson has spent most of the off-seasonworking on his game. Improving his strength has really been working hard on his blocking. As for what he excels at, Fortson just makes plays.
“I can do a lot in the open field. Once I get the ball, I can do a lot of things,”said Fortson. “I’m not the biggest receiver out there, but I can make moves,” added Fortson.
Kansas assistant coach Je’Ney Jackson has been the lead recruiter for Fortson, and according to Fortson, he really like Jackson’s approach and how well he informs him of the Kansas program. Fortson is very excited for his visit to Lawrence when he arrives on the 10th, and from the sound of it, the Jayhawks could be adding one heck of a play-maker in the 2010 class.
