When it comes to his recruitment, Flora MacDonald Academy (NC) power forward Luke Cothron has a list of programs a mile long to choose from. One of those programs is the Bill Self led Kansas Jayhawks, which Cothron will have the chance to check out next week during the Kansas Elite camp in Lawrence.
“I’m heading up there next week for the Elite camp,” Cothron said. “I am certainly excited to get up there and check it out,” Cothron added.
When it comes to the Kansas program, Cothron has respect for the head man himself, Coach Self, and for the Jayhawk legend Danny Manning.
“I talked to Coach Self not that long ago,” Cothron said. “I really like Coach Self. I definitely know who Danny Manning is. It would be cool to be coached by someone that’s been there and done that,” Cothron said of Coach Manning.
Cothron has also paid attention to some of the big men that have made their way through the Kansas program.
“I know Darrell Arthur was there and that they beat Memphis for the title, and I can see them (Kansas) on TV every night,” Cothron said.
The exposure at a place like Kansas is attractive to any recruit considering the Jayhawks. While being a nation powerhouse is surely a plus in Cothron’s eyes, he has other big time basketball schools that he’s considering as well.
“North Carolina, North Carolina State, Alabama, Arkansas, Memphis, Kentucky, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are some of the schools I have right now,” Cothron said.
Cothron’s list consists of a lot off schools that are in the southeastern part of the country, which obviously raises the question about Cothron leaving his native south to make his way north to a place like Lawrence. According to the native of Alabama, it doesn’t appear that it will be a problem.
“Nah, it won’t bother me to leave,” Cothron said. “Leaving home is no big deal,” Cothron added.
As for his long list, Cothron hopes to continue playing well during the summer and then take a look at narrowing it down. Don’t look for a decision any time soon; Cothron plans to take his time.
“I will narrow my list at the end of the summer. I won’t decide until late though,” Cothron said. “Probably after my senior season here, ” Cothron added.
Although it appears that no decision will be made by Cothron for a while, he doesn’t intend on taking many visits over the next few months.
“I don’t have any visits planned now. Officially, I will probably take three visits. I don’t think I’ll need five,” said Cothron.
When it comes to his game, Cothron is a long, athletic four man who can score in multiple ways out of the post and has good vision to pass out of double teams and hit cutting teammates. According to Cothron, his inside/outside game, combined with his jump-shot, is what he does best on the court right now. Cothron has some aspects of his game that he wishes to improve upon over the summer, speed and ball handling.
Cothron will have the opportunity to see what makes Kansas basketball special when he arrives for Elite camp next week. The good news for the Jayhawks is that they have the opportunity to show off some great things about the Kansas program during the Elite camp. Recruits, like Cothron, will also get to see what makes the Kansas coaching staff so good at what they do.
