ricki-herod4Several sources have told TheShiver.com tonight that North Mesquite High School Wide Receiver Ricki Herod has committed to the Jayhawks.  As TheShiver reported last week, Herod won the MVP award for wide receivers at the Nike Elite camp at TCU. Herod was simply unstoppable throughout the day, catching the ball at will during one on one drills.

***TheShiver.com caught up with Ricki tonight and although he didn’t pull the trigger and commit to the Jayhawks today, his excitement over Kansas offering him a scholarship was still obvious.

“I didn’t commit today, but KU offered me today,” Herod said. “I was actually at school when the offered. Coach Beaty offered me the scholarship,” Herod added.

Although he didn’t go ahead and end his recruitment, Herod might not be that far away from doing so.

“I’m thinking about committing now,” Herod said about when he might commit. “I may do it as early as tomorrow. I don’t know, I’m going to sleep on it and see how I feel in thee morning,” Herod added.

Herod has a short list of things that are important to him when looking at what college he might attend. Academics, the football program, and what life on campus is like. All three are important to Herod, who hasn’t decided what path he’ll take on the academic front once he’s in college.

“I was thinking about going to be an Engineer, but here lately I have been thinking about maybe finance or business,” Herod said.

Kansas is certainly an option for Herod both on and off the field. It’s on the field where Herod sees himself fitting in well with the Jayhawks.

“I love the football program,” Herod said about Mark Mangino’s Jayhawks. “I love the offense and what they run. Just throw the ball and let me go get it,” Herod added.

What Herod is best at, is exactly why he could potentially be a great fit for the Jayhawks.

“I’m best at getting open and creating space between me and the defender. I can also help other receivers get open,” Herod said. “I can catch the ball withing 5 yards and turn it into a big play,” Herod added.

Herod looked every bit the part when TheShiver.com caught up with him during the Nike Elite Camp @ TCU last week. Herod was simply the best wide receiver there, and arguably, the best player there. He had no trouble getting off the line of scrimmage and getting himself open during 1 on 1 drills. He was 100% correct when talking about creating space for himself. Not only did he get off the line and create space quickly, but Herod also maintained his speed throughout his routes and would find himself easily open for the catch. His performance won him the MVP award for the wide receivers, but that hasn’t changed Herod at all.

“Nothings changed. Still out here working hard,” Herod said.
