The best way to describe Calvin Coolidge High School (D.C.) Avery Williams is just by simply saying the word play-maker. Williams has used his versatility on the field to make himself one of the most electrifying players in the country. It’s those skills that has also made Williams one of the most highly sought after recruits in the country. West Virginia, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan State, Rutgers, and Utah. Williams recently had the opportunity to compete against some other top talent at the USC camp in southern California. Read the rest of this entry »

Hawkinson Ready To Help On O-Line

Posted by Chris Knapp On July - 1 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

tanner-hawkinsonTwo weeks before the Kansas football team began its 2009 spring season, head coach Mark Mangino called redshirt freshman defensive end Tanner Hawkinson into his office. The coaches had decided to move Jeremiah Hatch to his more natural position of center. That meant there was a void at left tackle on the offensive line and the team needed Hawkinson to fill it. This meant the first-year Jayhawk would need to learn a different position on the other side of the football.Hawkinson had played tight end and defensive end in high school. He came to KU as a tight end and switched to defensive end halfway through 2008 while spending the season as a redshirt. The idea of changing positions a few months later did not sit easily with Hawkinson. Read the rest of this entry »

Winning is a process, but not always a pretty one.

column-avatarThe recent Xavier and CJ Henry debacle has Cory thinking about the spirit of competition. Say what? Yeah, just follow him and hopefully he can make some sense of it all.

by cory hedgepeth

The competitive spirit is a spirit that has transcended societies past and present. It’s an extension of the human spirit, one that draws adoration of those that witness it. Its raw state of being.  It can burn the human soul into the incomprehensible and sometimes dark infinitum of human suffering. When Wilt Chamberlain ceremonially had his college jersey retired at Allen Fieldhouse in 1998, he sat with what appeared to be an ambivalent countenance as Max Falkenstien read through an unprecedented list of Chamberlain’s University, Conference and National statitistics.  Stats best described as unrivaled, gaudy at times, monumental, and never fleeting in terms of sports history. Chamberlain, a man among men, just moments from explaining his long absence from the starting point of one of the greatest sports careers of all-time, seemingly none-to-impressed by any of it. When he does rise from his bench chair, his gigantic torso is no match for his gigantic legacy, and the Kansas crowd erupts.   And then he takes the microphone, and professes, “A little over 40 years ago, I lost what I thought was the toughest battle in sports, in losing to the North Carolina Tarheels by 1 point in a triple overtime. It was a devastating thing for me because I felt as though I let the University of Kansas down and my teammates down.”
